Artistic World Cup Final Sao Paulo 2006

BETH TWEDDLEWhat a year! (V. Minkus)

Day One - Women
BETH TWEDDLE ADDS WORLD CUP TO HER EUROPEAN AND WORLD TROPHIES.
World Bars Champion BETH TWEDDLE scored 16.3 to win the WORLD CUP. Beth now stands alone in 2006 as Queen of the Bars.

FIG Points and World Ranking
This is a continuous ranking, determined by the addition of points obtained in selected events from the Olympic Games to national tournaments. At the end of a two-year period, the FIG Cup is either lost or won at a Final reserved for the top 8 gymnasts of each category.

FIG Points can be won at the Olympic Games, World Championships, large-scale international multisport events (the Asian Games, for example), the Continental Championships and in top Classics of the International Gymnastics Circuit (the Glasgow Grand Prix for example) in each discipline. The FIG plans and promotes specific events through the two-year cycle.

In 1975 the FIG decided to organise an original competition, reserved for the current best gymnasts. It was composed of a single and unique event, bringing together very few gymnasts in all around competition and in apparatus finals, giving just the slightest hint of a gala. This competition was titled the World Cup. This initiative was taken in a particular context, since the world championships took place at that time only every 4 years. This schedule was kept until 1990, the year in which the world championships cycle was modified. In 1997, the FIG Executive Committee made its international calendar consistent and took the decision to hold a World Cup Final (in even years) alternating with the World Championships (in uneven years).

This 13th Final was organised by the Brazilian Gymnastics Federation and its President, Vicelia Florenzano, who took up the torch from Monaco just a few months ago. Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the Ibirapuera Gymnasium, is known by gymnasts for its own Grand prix event.

This competition final also closes a very busy year with an exceedingly high number of competitions. Too high for some but despite a few withdrawals, the line-up was impressive.

Great Britain was represented at this World Final by Beth Tweddle on Bars, Imogen Cairns on Vault and Louis Smith on Pommels.

MEN
Floor was an impressive win by Xiao Qin, China, 16.05, ahead of the favourite Kyle Shewfelt.

Pommels gave Xiao 16.1 and a second Gold with Kristian Berki of Hungary splitting the Chinese as Teng Haibin held the Bronze. Louis Smith finished 5th with 15.775, a great end to a fabulous year for GBRs Commonwealth and Junior European Champion.
A surprising result in the Rings final gave Venezuelan Regulo Carmona 16.3. A terrific score but with fairly light opposition.

WOMEN
For GBR, Imogen Cairns finished 7th, 14.037 in a final won with 15.6 from China’s Cheng Fei.

World Bars Champion BETH TWEDDLE scored 16.3 to win Gold. Beth now stands alone in 2006 as Queen of the Bars. Li Ya of China tried hard but 16.225 was as good as a mile behind for Silver.

Day Two - Women

A SILVER BONUS FOR BETH

Day Two - Men's

Men’s Vault was won by Romania’s Marian Dragalescu.

The Parallel Bars Gold was taken by Li Xiaopeng of China.
