Ross Brewer qualifies for the All-around Final
Three times British Champion and two times Commonwealth
Games Team Gold medallist Ross Brewer, qualified for the Individual
All-around Final (top 24) of the World Championships in Melbourne.
He was one of the 49 gymnasts who competed for the All-around,
out of 177 gymnasts taking part in the Qualifications and
took 22nd position (51.424pts).
“Ross did his job very well!” said the National
coach Paul Hall. “His experience and preparation helped
him go through the competition “wisely”. He did
four fluent routines (Pommels, 9.150, Rings 8.375, Vault 9.012
and P. Bars 8.70) and had mistakes only on two (High Bar 7.925
and Floor, stepping out of the line, 8.262)".
The Men’s All-around Final is taking place on Thurs.
24 Nov.
The other British gymnasts, Louis Smith (16) competed only
on Pommels, in a group with the great Olympic and World Champions
and multiple medallists, Marius Urzica (ROM) and Xiao Qin
(CHN).
Unfortunately,
Louis fell from the horse and the score 8.762 did not give
him a chance to qualify for the Final. A similar fate befell
Urzica (9.025). However, Louis made very good impression on
his debut in World Championships which is very important for
his future career in the sport.
This was a day full of tension and numerous surprises, when
many of the top stars failed to qualify, leaving the floor
to a new wave of gymnasts.
Only the Japanese, Olympic Champions in Athens, seemed untouched
by strain and circumstances. They added to their renovated
image of Gymnastics Greats, with Hiroyuki Tomita and Hisashi
Mizutori winning the top two positions in the All-around (57.223
and 55.686 respectively). Closest to them, in third, was the
current European Champion Rafael Martinez, Spain (55.323).
