Three Gold medals for Beth and two for Fan Ye (CHN)!

Following the nail-biting, very exciting Team event on Saturday, 25 June, in which the GB Team were victorious against China by 0.075 pts., on Sunday, 26 June 2005 the best three gymnasts per Team competed on each apparatus continuing the challenge into the Finals.

Only Beth Tweddle (GB), the top scorer in the All-around and Imogen Cairns (GB), 3rd overall, qualified for all four apparatus, while Samantha Bailey (GB), Guo Li (GHN) and Li Ya (CHN) each qualified for three events.

Beth Tweddle was the most successful gymnasts of the day winning gold medal on Vault, A. Bars and Floor, in a tie with Fan Ye, who also took the gold medal on Beam.

Of the 12 medals available China took eight. They dominated on A. Bars, Beam and Floor.

The only British gymnasts who won a medal in the Finals, apart from Beth Tweddle was Imogen Cairns- Silver on Vault.

VAULT

“ In a Final “the second” Vault will be the decider. Few gymnasts have 2 Vaults of equal tariff and these that have are at the top!”, Adrian Stan, Technical Director WAG

On this occasion the highest ranked Vaults were spoiled by poor landings and unfortunately Samantha Bayley and Yang Yahon (CHN) lost medals by lack of security rather than Start Value.

Beth Tweddle was the deserved winner. Imogen Cairns lost the competition on poor style in her first Vault and Guo Li (CHN) took the Bronze, more with style than difficulty.

Medallists:

1. Beth Tweddle (GB)

1. Yurchenko 1½ twist- (SV 9.7)-9.325

2. R.O. ½ turn on- piked front salto off (SV 9.5)- 9.1 Final score-9.2375

2. Imogen Cairns (GB)

Yurchenko 1½ twist- (SV 9.7)- 9.35

R.O. ½ turn on-1/1turn backward salto off (SV 9.7)-9.075
Final score- 9.2125

3. Guo Li (CHN)

H/spring front piked with ½ turn (SV 9.6)- 9.2

Yurchenko with ½ turn (SV 9.4)-8.9
Final score-9.075

A.BARS

“Two to three releases a must – long combinations of elements with turns which in the main must hit the handstand position. A precise dismount in keeping with the level of the routine”. Adrian Stan

Another victory for Beth with her world-famous routine, highlights of which are Markelov into immediate Gienger, stoop on Tkachev, and her trade-mark back in full-out dismount, to a solid landing.

As can be seen from the scores the Chinese, traditionally leaders on this piece, fought strongly and demonstrated fully the Code of Points requirements.

Fan Ye’s body line and her clear circle half turn into Endo, followed with a Jaeger

and Pak and the same dismount as Beth, took the Bronze medal.

The Silver went to LI Ya, who performed four full turns from different grasps- a Jaeger into Pak and dismounted with a “half in half out” in the pike position.

Medallists:

Beth Tweddle (GB)- SV 10- 9.70

Li Ya (CHN)-SV 10- 9.65

Fan Ye (CHN) –SV10- 9.575

BEAM

“Stability is the number one requirement, but it must be accompanied by linked Acro/Gym or Gym/Gym combinations. All the routine must be very accurately executed!” Adrian Stan.

A clean sweep for China with only Beth Tweddle offering any challenge. Stability most certainly was the name of the game for the Asian Champions. The most impressive part of their exercises were their incredible leaps and jumps and the uninterrupted flow of their elements.

Medallists:

1. Fan Ye (CHN)-SV 10- 9.7

2. Li Ya (CHN)- SV 10- 9.5

3. Xiao Sha (CHN)- SV 9.9- 9.4

FLOOR

“Four tumbling runs, of very high difficulty supported by perfect combinations of spins, jumps and leaps with turns. Artistic and choreographic mastery is strongly desired- if well done- well rewarded!” Adrian Stan.

Imaginative use of music from all the three Chinese in the Final, Guo Li, Lin Xia and Fan Ye, whose routine will be long remembered as much as for her flawless dance to Spanish guitar music, as for her high difficulty (SV 10).

Beth Tweddle performed last not sparing any of her “weapons”- Arabian double tuck and piked somies, 1½ twists into front layout somersault- all performed with exceptional stability.

Medallists:

1= Fan Ye (CHN)- (SV 10)- 9.675

Beth Tweddle (GB)- (SV 10)- 9.675

3. Lin Xia (CHN) – (SV 10)- 9.55
