BRANDS HATCH DECIDER FOR THE AIRWAVES SPEED LEAGUE
It is not just the Bennetts British Superbike championship
that will be decided on October 14th, the season long Airwaves
Speed League will come to its climax too.
The Airwaves Speed League is an initiative set up by Wrigley’s
Airwaves at the start of the 2007 season to reward the competitor
who has achieved a new lap record or set the fastest lap on
race day. Competitors who have beaten the lap record have
received two points, whilst just one point has been given
to the rider who has recorded the fastest lap at each of the
13 rounds.
The rider with the most points at the end of the season will
be awarded a cheque for £5,000 to be donated to his
chosen charity.
Only 4 competitors have featured in the 2007 Speed League;
Lavilla, Kiyonari, Rea and Haslam. The first half of the season
was dominated by Lavilla and Rea before Kiyonari recorded
an impressive run of points to overtake his team mate and
draw to within just 1 point of Lavilla. With Kiyo breaking
the lap record at Donington and only 2 points left up for
grabs at Brands Hatch only Kiyonari and Lavilla are still
in the running for the £5,000 charity cheque, in the
inaugural Airwaves Speed League.
HM Plant’s Ryuichi Kiyonari and Airwaves Ducati’s
Gregorio Lavilla have 7 and 6 points respectively, so it will
all come down to who can set the fastest lap time at the 1.2
mile Brands Hatch Indy circuit on Sunday October 14th. The
current lap record 45.8 seconds is held by Lavilla but with
the title in his sights Kiyo maybe pushing even harder in
the season finale.
The Airwaves Speed League cheque will be awarded on the podium
by Wrigley’s Marketing Director Toby Baker after the
championship presentation – will it be a highlight of
Gregorio Lavilla’s season or will Kiyonari be adding
the Airwaves Speed League to a Bennetts British Superbike
championship title?
