TEENAGERS SET TO LOCK HORNS AT THE BUCKINGHAMSHIRE
A
feast of golf is expected to be served up when the England
under 18 Squad face the Under 16s in a training match at The
Buckinghamshire Golf Club on Tuesday 1st April.
Both eight-a-side teams are packed with talent, some of them
the stars of tomorrow, and while many are close friends, there
is expected to be some keen rivalry.
The under 18 team will comprise Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath);
Tom Berry (Wentworth); Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall); Stiggy
Hodgson (Sunningdale); Gary King (Tyrrells Wood); Tom Lewis
(Welwyn Garden City); Garrick Porteous (Bamburgh Castle) and
Max Smith (Newbury Racecourse).
The under 16s will be made up of James Burnett (Sleaford),
Adam Carson (Long Ashton), Matthew Chapman (Walton Heath),
Bill Downing (Truro), Jack Heasman (West Essex), Chris Lloyd
(The Kendleshire), Edward Peters (Beeston Fields) and Harry
Whittle (Woburn).
Every member of the Under 18 team and some of the Under 16s
have been capped at under 16 or boys level and several have
figured prominently in key events at home and abroad.
Bell is a former English under 14 Champion and Fleetwood
and King were members of the squad that won the Honda Junior
International Championship in Japan last year.
Also in 2007, Lewis (pictured – photo courtesy of Tom
Ward) won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, was runner-up
in the English Under 16 Championship along with Smith and
tied with Lloyd for the North of England Under 16 Championship.
Lloyd won the Ernie Els World Junior Invitational in Fancourt
this week and is also the South West Under 16 Champion while
Carson won the English Under 16 Championship in 2007. Last
year Whittle won the Scottish Under 14 Championship and the
Douglas Johns Trophy.
The format at The Buckinghamshire will follow familiar lines
with four morning foursomes followed by eight singles matches.
