TALENTED TRIO CHALLENGE FOR ERNIE ELS TITLE
Three
of England’s most talented youngsters will represent
the English Golf Union in the inaugural Ernie Els World Junior
Invitational Tournament in South Africa next month.
Tom Berry and Tom Lewis, both members of the England Under
18 Squad, and Chris Lloyd from the Under 16 Squad, are in
the 120-strong field for the tournament at Fancourt Golf and
Country Club, at George, on the Cape from 24th - 27th March.
Berry (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), who is
based at Wentworth and turns 17 later this month, enjoyed
a successful 2007. He played against Sweden in a friendly
international, was capped at under 16 level against Scotland,
finished fourth in the North of England Under 16 Championship
and helped Surrey win the Boys County Championship. A former
Surrey Under 14 Champion, he finished second in the 2005 English
Under 14 Championship for the Reid Trophy and helped Surrey
to second spot in the 2006 Boys County Championship.
Lewis, 17, from Mid Herts Golf Club, finished third behind
Berry in the English Under 14 Championship in 2005 and also
enjoyed a successful 2007 with two outstanding victories.
He won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and tied first
with Lloyd for the North of England Under 16 title. He was
also joint runner-up in the English Under 16 Championship
for the McGregor Trophy and a semi-finalist in the Hertfordshire
Championship while he was also capped at under 16 level against
Spain and Scotland.
Beside sharing the North of England Under 16 title with Lewis
last year, Lloyd, 16 who plays out of The Kendleshire, won
the South West Under 16 Championship and finished runner-up
in the English Boys Under 18 Championship for the Carris Trophy
and the South West Boys Championship. Like Lewis, he also
played in the under 16 internationals against Spain and Scotland.
A former Gloucestershire Under 15 Champion, Lloyd finished
tied third in the Reid Trophy and sixth in the North of England
Boys Championship, both in 2006, and equal eighth in the 2004
Reid Trophy as a 12 year old.
The Ernie Els tournament, which is part of the Ernie Els
& Fancourt Foundation, replaces the event known as the
Ernie Els Junior Tour and is played over 72 holes of stroke
play.
