ABBOTT AND WAINWRIGHT CHALLENGE FOR RIVERSDALE CUP
Jamie
Abbott (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), a recent
recruit to the England Elite Squad, and Adam Wainwright, leading
scorer in last month’s Costa Ballena Tournament in Spain,
have been selected to represent the EGU in the Riversdale
Cup in Australia next month.
The pair will contest the Australian Amateur Foursome Championship
over 36 holes on 5th March followed by the 113th Riversdale
Cup over 72 holes on 7th - 10th March, both events will be
held at the Riversdale Golf Club in Melbourne. The Riversdale
Cup, the second oldest tournament in Australia having been
inaugurated in 1896, also incorporates an international team
event.
Abbott, who is based at Fynn Valley Golf Club in Suffolk,
was one of a number of young players making their debuts in
the Elite Squad this year. A former winner of the Henriques
Salver for the best British under-20 player at the Brabazon
Trophy, he enjoyed a successful 2007 with top ten finishes
in the Berkhamsted Trophy, Lagonda Trophy, South of England
Stroke Play and the Lee Westwood Trophy. He was also the leading
player in the South East Qualifying, while the 20 year old
was capped at Boys level for the first time when he helped
England win the 2005 Boys Home Internationals.
Wainwright, Gainsborough Golf Club, scored five points out
of six when England finished runners-up in Costa Ballena.
Promoted from the Under 21 squad to the England ‘A’
Squad this year, the Lincolnshire 21 year old reached the
last 16 of last year’s English Amateur Championship,
finished tied third in the Lagonda Trophy and tied fourth
in the Selborne Salver.
An English player has never won the Riversdale Cup although
Robert Steele finished equal fifth and Ben Parker joint seventh
two years ago.
