KENT SENIORS AIMING FOR FIRST COUNTY TITLE

Sam SmaleKent will hope to go one better than in the past two years when their over 55 golfers tee up in the English Seniors County Finals at Rotherham Golf Club on 9th - 11th October.

When the event was successfully launched two years ago at Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire, Cheshire emerged triumphant. They retained the title last year at Torksey in Lincoln, Kent finishing runners-up on both occasions. However, with Cheshire not defending after failing to win their regional championship, finishing behind Lancashire, Kent will arguably start favourites.

The other regional winners competing are Devon and Shropshire & Herefordshire, like Lancashire, making their debut in the finals.

Kent, who have dominated seniors golf in the south east over the past two years, will field three England internationals in Howard Moxon, Chris Reynolds and Sam Smale (pictured - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), the latter who is winning his first cap in this week’s Seniors Home Internationals at Caldy. In fact, the Kent team shows just one change from last year’s squad, Smale coming in for Chris Buckley.

Lancashire also field a senior international in Stewart King but they will be without their other cap and Seniors Champion, Alan Squires who has business commitments.

Devon, who finished third last year, field four members of that side including Jon Gynne, their county Seniors Champion, Tony Stanton, a former champion, and Brian Winteridge, runner-up in this year’s South West Seniors.

Shropshire & Herefordshire, winners of the Midland region, also boast an international in Anthony Smith, while their Seniors Champion Basil Griffiths is also in their line-up.

The Finals are contested on a round robin basis, each match consisting of three foursomes and six singles. In the first round of matches on 9th October, Devon meet Lancashire and Kent will play Shropshire & Herefordshire.
