CHERYL IS THE PRIDE OF THE 19TH HOLE
Cheryl Oakes, Steward at Kettering Golf Club, has been awarded
the title of London Pride EGU Steward of the Year.
The competition was launched in July with the aim of finding
the club steward at the 19th hole who provides the most welcoming
and enjoyable experience for golfers, be they members or visitors.
Votes were received from golfers all over England who nominated
their favourite steward and the initial short list identified
three top candidates in each of the four EGU regions, North,
Midland, South East and South West. These final candidates
were then judged against their standard of service and presentation,
as well as their flair, innovation, dedication and commitment.
Cheryl was recognised as the Midland Regional Winner and
the dedication and service provided by her and her team at
Kettering also ensured she also took the national top prize.
Cheryl received over 50 votes of support from members and
golfers at Kettering Golf Club, so the award should come as
no surprise to her customers.
After presenting Cheryl with her award John Roberts, Managing
Director of the Fuller’s Beer Company, commented, “We
are very proud to be the sponsor of the inaugural EGU Steward
of the Year competition. The reception you receive at the
clubhouse provides a lasting impression to take with you after
a day on the golf course. The best steward is the one to congratulate
and celebrate with you after a great round or to commiserate
and motivate you after a bad one.
"As an Official Partner of the EGU, London Pride is
a perfect sponsor for Steward of the Year and we look forward
to see this competition go from strength to strength. We want
to recognise those people who make a real difference at the
19th Hole, with great beer, great banter and excellent service
and Cheryl certainly fits that bill.”
Craig Wagstaff, EGU Finance Director added, “Golf is
a great game, played by millions throughout England. The service
in the clubhouse before or after a round can really make a
difference and we are delighted to officially recognize Cheryl’s
fantastic efforts which are certainly already appreciated
by the members of Kettering Golf Club.”
In addition to her trophy, Cheryl wins two tickets for a
day’s play at a Lord’s Test Match, with two nights
accommodation at a Fuller’s Hotel.
After receiving her award Cheryl said “I’m absolutely
over the moon to win this award. I love my role at Kettering,
and get a real buzz every time I set foot in the clubhouse.
I was staggered to discover how many of my customers had actually
taken the time to send in an entry.
“It’s very easy to make a positive impression,
and when someone’s had a terrible round, it doesn’t
take much to put a smile back on their face – and it’s
something I love doing.”
The other three Regional Winners were, for the North, Steve
Abbott of Eaton Golf Club in Chester; for the South East,
Keith Sessions of Goring & Streatley Golf Club in Berkshire;
for the South West, Brian Hobson of Long Ashton Golf Club
in Bristol.
The London Pride EGU Steward of the Year is part of a five
year deal between Fuller’s and the EGU which supports
amateur golf and provides greater recognition to clubs and
their members.
