ENGLAND THREESOME INTO AMATEUR LAST 32
Three
England internationals moved through to the third round of
the Amateur Championship after an eventful first day of the
match play at Royal Lytham.
Although Jamie Moul (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom
Ward) won his match with England team-mate Paul Waring on
the 17th green, both Gary Boyd and David Horsey needed extra
holes to reach the last 32.
Moul’s reaction after a 2 and 1 victory over Waring
was: “It was a bit scrappy. My short game saved me.
I pitched and putted well.” The Suffolk man now meets
Australia’s Rohan Blizard, the pair having halved their
match in last winter’s Ashes contest Down Under.
Boyd had to go to the 10th before seeing off Germany’s
Maximilian Kieffer, while Horsey, the leading qualifier, was
taken to the 21st before edging through against John Parry
in another clash between two England internationals. Boyd
now faces Shane Lowry from Ireland, while Jason Shufflebotham
from Wales will be Horsey’s opposition.
Apart from Parry and Waring’s departures, two more
England caps departed, Seve Benson in the first round and
Ben Parker in round two. Benson went down to boy cap Ben Evans
by two holes, while Parker lost 2 and 1 to Ireland’s
Jonathan Caldwell.
One of the highlights of the day came from Yorkshire’s
Daniel Willett who put out major Irish hope Rory McIlroy by
2 and 1.
Willett now meets Scottish international Kevin McAlpine who
put out Luke Thomas of Wales 5 and 3.
