ENGLAND'S DAVID HORSEY SETS EARLY LEAD AT BRITISH AMATEUR
David
Horsey equalled the course record at Royal Lytham & St
Annes on the opening day of the British Amateur Championship.
An early start resulted in an early lead, reminisant of the
22-year-old’s first round at the Brabazon Trophy this
year when he led also the field. Horsey (photo © Tom
ward), from the Styal club in Manchester, was undeterred by
a bogey on the first hole and went on to card 64 , seven-under-par.
A member of the England Elite squad, Horsey’s round
included six birdies and an eagle-three at the 11th.
Other England players are also still in contention. At St
Annes Old Links, which shares the qualifying rounds with Lytham,
Ben Parker shot a 66 in a round that had eight birdies and
three dropped shots.
Chris Wood, a member of the England U-21 Squad will be relishing
his 2 eagles and 3 birdies which brought him home in 67 but
will be wishing away his bogey and double bogey at the 12th
and the 9th holes.
Jamie Moul, a semi-finalist last year, and Brabazon Trophy
winner this season, began with an open round of 68, a score
equalled by his England team mates Gary Boyd, John Parry and
Paul Waring.
With only the leading 64 players going into the match play
stages of the championship there will be fierce competition
during today’s second round. Royal Lytham has a par
of 71 and St Annes Old Links 72 and after the first 18 holes
there are 63 players under 70.
