Finnish date for talented England trio

Evans (photo © Tom Ward)Three of England’s brightest young golfers have been selected to represent the English Golf Union in the 54-hole Finnish Open Amateur Championship at Helsinki Golf Club, Tali, on 9th - 11th August.

Luke Collins from Somerset, Sussex-based Ben Evans and Mark Thistleton from Hampshire will seek to extend England’s success in the event.

Collins, 22, a member of the England A Squad for the past three years, reached the quarter finals of the Spanish and Italian Amateur Championships last year and represented the EGU in the Russian Amateur and the Federal Amateur Open in Australia. He was a member of the England squad that finished runners-up in the Costa Ballena Tournament in Spain earlier this year and recently won the Berkshire Trophy, his first major title.

Evans (photo © Tom Ward), 20, is a former under 16 and boy cap and another member of the England A Squad. The Rye golfer last year represented the EGU in Holland, Italy and also played in the Federal Amateur Open in Canberra. He also played in the Costa Ballena Tournament this year and has finished sixth in the Berkhamsted Trophy, and fifth in the Welsh Open Stroke Play and the Berkshire Trophy.

Thistleton, 25, is a former Hampshire Champion, who won the Lagonda Trophy in 2006. This year he has won the Selborne Salver in a playoff, finished third in defending the Lagonda, and was tied second in the qualifying for the Amateur Championship.

The Finnish event has proved successful for English players. Ross Fisher won the title in 2003, beating Gary Wolstenholme in a play-off, while Wolstenholme won the title in 1996.

Apart from the individual championship, England have also been successful in the Nations Cup which is decided over the opening 36 holes, the best two cards to count in each round.
