ENGLAND IN SECOND PLACE AFTER FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND
England
began the defence of the European Men’s Team Championships
in fine style by filling second place after the opening day
of qualifying at Western Gailes in Ayrshire.
With five scores from six to count, England returned 355,
two behind France and two ahead of third placed Scotland.
The main objective is to be among the top eight teams after
the second round because only they go forward to the championship
flight match-play. You cannot win the European title if you
finish ninth in the qualifying.
Jamie Moul and Paul Waring (pictured left - photo courtesy

backed by a 70 from Gary Wolstenholme, playing in his seventh
European Men’s Team Championships.
John Parry added 74 and Gary Boyd 75 with David Horsey’s
76 proving the non-counting card.
France also had three sub-par scores but their worst counting
return was 73.
Scotland’s best return was Kevin McAlpine with 68 while
Ireland’s Rory McIlroy went round in a fine 67 to leave
his side in fourth place on 358.
