BLUE RIBAND EVENTS RETURN TO HOYLAKE AND LITTLE ASTON
Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake, which staged the Open
Championship last year, has generously agreed to host the
Brabazon Trophy in 2010. Also in the list of fixtures for
that year just released, Little Aston and Sutton Coldfield
will be the venues for the English Amateur Championship.
Royal Liverpool has staged the Brabazon on four occasions.
In 1961, the late Ronnie Shade was champion followed in 1972
by Peter Moody, a former Cambridge captain. Sandy Lyle lifted
the trophy at Hoylake in 1977, while the 1989 event, the most
recent, saw a tie between Craig Rivett from South Africa and
Neil Roderick from Wales.
The last occasion an EGU event was held at the famous Cheshire
venue was in 1997 when Adam Wainwright from Yorkshire beat
Cornwall’s Philip Rowe in the final of the English Amateur
Championship.
The 2010 fixtures also see several events move from their
regular dates such as the Brabazon which leaves its familiar
mid-May schedule to a new slot of 25th - 27th June.
The English Amateur hasn’t been staged at Little Aston
since 1985 when Roger Winchester lifted the title. On the
two previous occasions it was held at the famous venue, Philip
Perkins was the winner in 1927 while Alan Helm was champion
in 1948.
The 2010 championship will be held on 26th - 31st July with
the opening two days of qualifying being shared with Sutton
Coldfield, the first time the club has staged an EGU event.
The Mid-Amateur Championship for the Logan Trophy also moves
to a new date in 2010, being staged on 2nd - 4th July at Sherwood
Forest, a regular venue for EGU championships in recent years,
but the Seniors Championship retains its early summer slot
of 2nd - 4th June at Carlisle and Eden Golf Clubs.
Hunstanton in Norfolk will be the venue for the County Finals
on 24th - 26th September, while the Boys County Finals will
be staged in the north at Berwick Golf Club in Northumberland
on 24th -26th August.
With the European Seniors Championships being by England
at Fairhaven on 31st August - 3rd September that year, the
Seniors County Finals move to Ferndown on 5th - 7th October,
while the Seniors Home Internationals are set for Wales.
As far as the junior championships are concerned, the McGregor
Trophy (under 16s) will be played at Prince’s in Kent
on 13th - 15th July, the Carris Trophy (under 18s) at Woodhall
Spa on 20th - 22nd July, and the Reid Trophy (under 14s) at
Hesketh on 3rd - 5th August.
