ANOTHER AUSTRALIAN WIN FOR SUPER STEPHEN
Stephen Lewton completed his second victory in a fortnight
in Australia when he won the 100th New South Wales Medal at
Mona Vale Golf Club in northern Sydney.
With the Avondale Medal already in his pocket, Lewton carded
a closing 71 for 275, 11 under par, and a one shot winning
margin from Australia’s Rohan Blizard.
Of the other English players, Gary Wolstenholme finished
fifth on 281 after a closing 66, David Horsey tied sixth a
further shot behind, Jason Palmer equal 14th on 289, while
Matthew Cryer totalled 291 for joint 18th place.

(pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), the 23 year
old from Woburn, was lying fifth on a tightly-packed leaderboard
at halfway, five strokes off the lead held by current Australian
Amateur champion Tim Stewart.
But a third round 64 on the morning of the final day saw
Lewton start the fourth round sharing the lead on 204 with
Blizard and Stewart. However, in the afternoon the England
international was the only one of the trio to beat par as
Blizard carded a 72 and Stewart 75.
Wolstenholme, a regular entrant in the event, was 11 strokes
back at the start of the final circuit. But a 66, the best
of the round, hauled him up to fifth, just six strokes behind
Lewton.
Fellow international Horsey was third after 36 holes but
a third round 75 dented his hopes although a closing 69 earned
him a creditable share of sixth spot.
With the leading 32 players qualifying for this week’s
New South Wales Amateur match play event, all five Englishmen
will be in action at Terrey Hills from Wednesday.
