YOUNG DEFENDS LOGAN TROPHY AT MINCHINHAMPTON
Martin Young from Hampshire will defend the title when the
English Open Mid-Amateur Championship for the Logan Trophy
takes place at Minchinhampton Golf Club in Gloucestershire
on 24th - 26th August.

Club, won the title a year ago at Hayling by five strokes
from Yorkshire’s Barry Downing (Hallamshire) and Craig
Townsend (Teign Valley) from Devon.
Downing and Townsend, brother of rugby international Gregor
Townsend, are also in the field along with Midlander Paul
Griffiths (Sandwell Park) and Malcolm Reid (Royal Ascot) from
Berkshire, joint fourth a year ago.
Overall, there are four former champions competing, title-holder
Young, Downing, champion in 2000, and Griffiths and Nigel
Chesters, joint champions two years ago.
The field of 132 also includes Colin Edwards (Bath), a regular
England international through the 1990s until 2002 during
which he played 86 times for his country. Among his individual
successes were victories in the West of England Championship,
the Berkshire Trophy and the Somerset Championship 11 times.
He has also reached the semi-finals and quarter finals of
the Amateur Championship
Also competing are two more former internationals in Roger
Roper (Wike Ridge) from Yorkshire and Bedfordshire’s
John Kemp (John O’Gaunt) along with England senior international
Michael Wigley (Hankley Common) from Surrey.
The Logan Trophy is open to players over 35 years of age,
is played over 54 holes with a cut after 36, the leading 45
players and ties going through to the final round. The Championship
was inaugurated in 1988 when Peter McEvoy was the first winner.
