YOUNG DEFENDS LOGAN TROPHY AT MINCHINHAMPTON

Martin Young from Hampshire will defend the title when the English Open Mid-Amateur Championship for the Logan Trophy takes place at Minchinhampton Golf Club in Gloucestershire on 24th - 26th August.

Martin YoungYoung (photo © Tom Ward), who plays at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club, won the title a year ago at Hayling by five strokes from Yorkshire’s Barry Downing (Hallamshire) and Craig Townsend (Teign Valley) from Devon.

Downing and Townsend, brother of rugby international Gregor Townsend, are also in the field along with Midlander Paul Griffiths (Sandwell Park) and Malcolm Reid (Royal Ascot) from Berkshire, joint fourth a year ago.

Overall, there are four former champions competing, title-holder Young, Downing, champion in 2000, and Griffiths and Nigel Chesters, joint champions two years ago.

The field of 132 also includes Colin Edwards (Bath), a regular England international through the 1990s until 2002 during which he played 86 times for his country. Among his individual successes were victories in the West of England Championship, the Berkshire Trophy and the Somerset Championship 11 times. He has also reached the semi-finals and quarter finals of the Amateur Championship

Also competing are two more former internationals in Roger Roper (Wike Ridge) from Yorkshire and Bedfordshire’s John Kemp (John O’Gaunt) along with England senior international Michael Wigley (Hankley Common) from Surrey.

The Logan Trophy is open to players over 35 years of age, is played over 54 holes with a cut after 36, the leading 45 players and ties going through to the final round. The Championship was inaugurated in 1988 when Peter McEvoy was the first winner.
