ENGLAND STRONG IN SINGLES TO BEAT SPAIN
England
completed a comprehensive 8½ - 3½ victory over
Spain in their annual under 16 international at Heswall.
For the first time, both teams were composed of boys and
girls and the morning foursomes proved extremely close, England
edging it 2-1 with one match halved.
The girls matches were shared, Heidi Baek, the English under
15 champion, and Alex Peters winning but Sian Evans and Helen
Searle were beaten heavily.
Both English boys pairings trailed for most of their matches
but Tommy Fleetwood and Tom Lewis managed to grab a half against
Javier de Santiago and Roberto Sebastian by winning the final
hole after Fleetwood pitched to six feet and Lewis holed for
birdie.
Adam Carson, the England under 16 champion, and Chris Lloyd
(pictured - photo courtsy of Tom Ward), who were also playing
catch-up for most of the contest, were all square playing
the last against Jorge Simon and Javier Gallegos but managed
to snatch a par to win as the Spanish took bogey from a bunker.
In the singles, Heidi Baek and Alex Peters won comfortably
but Sian Evans and Helen Searle were beaten, leaving the match
finely poised.
However, the boys came through strongly with Carson and Fleetwood
never looked like losing and won out in the country while
only Lewis was taken to the final green as all four matches
fell into England’s hands.
