MORRISON RECALLED FOR EUROPEAN SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Andrew MorrisonAndrew Morrison (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), a retired schoolteacher from Cumbria, has earned a recall to the England team for the European Men’s Team Championships at Bled in Slovenia on 15th - 18th August.

Morrison, a former Northern Counties Seniors champion, was last capped four years ago in the Seniors Home Internationals at Seaton Carew when Ireland and Wales shared the title.

The rest of what is an experienced England line-up is Douglas Arnold, David Lane, Chris Reynolds, Roy Smethurst and Alan Squires. The team manager will be Jon Marks.

Arnold, from Sussex, has won three English Seniors titles, in 2002 at Heswall, in 2003 at Frilford Heath, and at Yelverton in 2006. He has also represented England in Europe last year and in every Seniors Home Internationals since its inception in 2002. The Copthorne club member also lost a play-off for the European Seniors title in 2003, and he is the current Sussex Seniors Champion.

Lane, from BB&O, has been a kingpin of seniors golf for many years. He also has three English titles to his credit, the most recent coming at Enville in June, as well as the British Seniors Championship in 1998. Lane has also won the Scottish Seniors twice, the South East Seniors and the BB&O Seniors on eight occasions.

Reynolds made his England seniors debut in last year’s Seniors Home Internationals in Scotland and represented Kent in the Seniors County Finals at Lincoln last year. He also finished runner-up to Lane in this year’s English Seniors Championship.

Smethurst is arguably the most successful seniors golfer in Britain. Since 2000 he has won the English title four times, the British title once, the European Seniors once, and helped Cheshire to the past two English Seniors County titles. He has also had several runners-up finishes including a losing playoff for the European Seniors Championship and has been a seniors international for the past six years. He has also claimed the Cheshire seniors title on several occasions.

Squires, the current Lancashire Seniors Champion, has played in the past three Seniors Home Internationals and well as last year‘s European Seniors Team Championships. In the past three English Seniors Championship, he has finished third on two occasions and joint second in 2006.

A year ago at the inaugural European Seniors Team Championships in Finland, England finished third behind winners Scotland and Ireland.
