ENGLAND TEAM MEMBERS CHALLENGE FOR EUROPEAN TITLE
England
will make a concerted bid to win the European International
Amateur Championship by selecting nine members of the Home
Internationals team among a group of 16 players to compete
in the event at Sporting Golf Club, Berlin, on 22nd - 25th
August.
The nine from the Home Internationals team are Matthew Baldwin
(Royal Birkdale), Gary Boyd (Cherwell Edge), Matthew Cryer
(Coventry), Ben Evans (Rye), Sam Hutsby (Liphook), Ben Parker
(Royal Birkdale), Dale Whitnell (Five Lakes), Daniel Willett
(Rotherham) and Chris Wood (Long Ashton).
The rest of the squad will be Seve Benson (Wentworth), Neil
Chaudhuri (The Leicestershire), Luke Collins (Mendip Spring),
Luke Goddard (Hendon), David Horsey (Styal), Jamie Moul (Stoke
by Nayland), and John Parry (Harrogate).
Baldwin, Evans, Hutsby, Whitnell, Willett and Wood will be
making their full England debuts in the Home Internationals
in Ireland in September.
Willett is the new English Champion following his victory
over Cryer at Royal St George’s, while other recent
victories saw Benson win the Tillman Trophy while Parker lifted
the German Amateur Championship.
Hutsby (photo © Tom Ward) finished top in the St Mellion
International, Whitnell took the North of England Youth Championship
and Wood, winner of the Russian Amateur, finished runner-up
in the Tillman Trophy.
More recent success have seen Chaudhuri win the Czech Amateur,
Collins the Finnish Amateur and Cryer winning the British
Mid-Amateur Championship.
The last Englishman to win the European Amateur title was
Matthew Richardson in Sweden three years ago. That win ended
a 13 year wait, the previous English winner being Jim Payne
in 1991.
