TEENAGER BROWN STRIKES GOLD IN THE RAIN
Edward
Brown, (Picture © Tom Ward) became the second successive
teenager to lift the title when he won the London Pride EGU
Gold Medal on a wet and windy day at Woodhall Spa.
The 16 year old from Royal Ascot compiled a second round
Stableford score of 40 points over the Bracken Course for
an aggregate of 73 and a two point winning margin from Colin
Sloan of Bristol with three players on 70.
“I came here with no expectations to win,” said
Brown. “This win has not registered yet. Although I
scored 40 points today I didn’t feel I played more than
average. I just want to get down to single figures now,”
said the 19-handicapper.
Brown was in one of the last groups out and on a miserable
day in Lincolnshire found the worst of the weather with almost
constant rain.
But it didn’t perturb him and he knew his luck was
in when his tee shot at the 16th bounced across the surface
of a water hazard and finished on the green.
Sloan, 51, a four-handicapper from the Filton club in Bristol,
returned 39 points to add to his opening 32, while of those
players on 70, Stuart Walters, another 19-handicapper, took
third place on countback with 38 points.
Hendon teenager Marc Kuber made a brave defence of his title
with 66 points for joint eighth place.
