REYNOLDS MAKES HIS DEBUT FOR ENGLAND SENIORS
Chris Reynolds (Littlestone) is the only new cap in the England
team for the Seniors Home Internationals being played at Dunbar
in Scotland on 3rd - 5th October.
The rest of the side is:- Douglas Arnold (Copthorne), Stewart
King (West Lancashire), Bob Knott (Churston), David Lane (Goring
and Streatley), Alan Squires (Oldham) and Roy Smethurst (Crewe)
Reynolds has an impressive record both on and off the course
in Kent. The 57 year old chartered accountant lost in the
final of the Kent Championship in 1984 but has won the county
Mid Age Championship on three occasions and was Kent Seniors
Champion last year.
He has also won the club championship at Littlestone and
West Kent as well as several other Kent Union titles.
Reynolds was also Kent Captain from 1983 - 1985, Captain
of Ashford Golf Club in 1984 and is currently Vice Captain
at Littlestone and a vice president of the Kent County Union.
He is one of two changes from the side that finished third
in the recent European Seniors Team Championships in Finland,
the other being the return of Roy Smethurst.
The Crewe man underwent surgery in May, which forced him
to miss the English Seniors, where he was defending champion,
as well as the European Seniors and the European Team Championships.
Smethurst has an impressive record in seniors golf with one
European, one British and four English titles to his credit
not to mention a host of England caps and other domestic honours.
Arnold won his third English Championship at Yelverton in
June and the Sussex man has been an England regular since
the Home Internationals started five years ago as has Lane,
another multiple seniors champion with one British, two English
and two Scottish seniors titles.
King, the Secretary/Manager at West Lancashire Golf Club,
made his England debut in the European Seniors Team Championships
in Finland, which capped a highly successful season. He was
tied fifth in both the Irish and English Seniors Championships
and runner-up in the Northern Counties Seniors.
Knott, from Devon, was another new cap in Finland and has
finished runner-up in each of the past two English Seniors
Championships.
Squires, from Lancashire, has played in the past two Seniors
Home Internationals as well as in Finland, having finished
joint third in last year’s English Seniors and joint
runner-up this year.
England have been Home International champions on three occasions,
in the inaugural year 2001, 2002 and 2004. Last year in Ireland
they finished fourth.
At Dunbar, when Ireland will be defending the title, the
sides will play each other on a round robin basis, each match
consisting of three foursomes and six singles, all over 18
holes.
The full England team is: Douglas Arnold (Copthorne), Stewart
King (West Lancashire), Bob Knott (Churston), David Lane (Goring
and Streatley), Chris Reynolds (Littlestone), Alan Squires
(Oldham), Roy Smethurst (Crewe).
