PALMER MAKES IT A CLEAN SWEEP FOR ENGLISH GOLFERS IN ITALY

golfers completed a clean sweep in the Italian Open Amateur
Championship at Golf Club Villa d’Este, near Lake Como.
Having won the Nations Cup through the Surrey pair of James
Morrison and Seve Benson, who finished in the leading two
places after the stroke play, Leicestershire’s Jason
Palmer won the match play title with a 3 and 2 victory over
Sweden’s Nils Floren.
Palmer, 21 , from the Kirby Muxloe Golf Club, who competed
in the World Universities Championships in Italy the previous
week, began with a 3 and 2 win over Federico Colombo of Italy
then came out on top by the same margin over Dutchman Flores
de Vries.
In the quarter finals, Palmer overcame Niccolo Quintarelli
from Italy by one hole then reached the final by beating Surrey’s
Jon Poulton 2 and 1.
Floren booked his final spot with a 3 and 2 win over England
international Matt Cryer.
A total of nine English players qualified in the top 32 for
the match play stages. Morrison beat Cheshire’s Dale
Marmion 4 and 3 in the first round then lost by one hole to
Chris Wood, the Gloucestershire champion.
Wood went on to reach the quarter finals where he went down
by one hole to Cryer.
Benson beat Bortignoni of Italy 2 and 1 on round one then
went out to Somerset’s Luke Collins by one hole in the
last 16, Collins then becoming a victim of Poulton in the
quarters.
