PALMER MAKES IT A CLEAN SWEEP FOR ENGLISH GOLFERS IN ITALY English golfers completed a clean sweep in the Italian Open Amateur Championship at Golf Club Villa d’Este, near Lake Como.

Having won the Nations Cup through the Surrey pair of James Morrison and Seve Benson, who finished in the leading two places after the stroke play, Leicestershire’s Jason Palmer won the match play title with a 3 and 2 victory over Sweden’s Nils Floren.

Palmer, 21 , from the Kirby Muxloe Golf Club, who competed in the World Universities Championships in Italy the previous week, began with a 3 and 2 win over Federico Colombo of Italy then came out on top by the same margin over Dutchman Flores de Vries.

In the quarter finals, Palmer overcame Niccolo Quintarelli from Italy by one hole then reached the final by beating Surrey’s Jon Poulton 2 and 1.

Floren booked his final spot with a 3 and 2 win over England international Matt Cryer.

A total of nine English players qualified in the top 32 for the match play stages. Morrison beat Cheshire’s Dale Marmion 4 and 3 in the first round then lost by one hole to Chris Wood, the Gloucestershire champion.

Wood went on to reach the quarter finals where he went down by one hole to Cryer.

Benson beat Bortignoni of Italy 2 and 1 on round one then went out to Somerset’s Luke Collins by one hole in the last 16, Collins then becoming a victim of Poulton in the quarters.
