ENGLAND PAIRING DOMINATE NATIONS CUP IN ITALY
The
Surrey pair of James Morrison (St George's Hill) and Seve
Benson (Wentworth) have won the Nations Cup in Italy by a
stunning 13 shot margin. The pair dominated the stroke play
rounds of the Italian International Amateur Championship at
Villa d’Este Golf Club, near Como, taking the top two
individual spots.
Morrison (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward) led
the chasing pack by four shots after an opening round of 62
on Wednesday and a second round of 70 has ensured he takes
the number one seed position in today's match play draw. Benson
added a second sub-seventy round of 69 to his opening 66,
to take the runner-up spot, valuably contributing to a team
total of 267, well clear of Italy and Germany tied second
on 280.
An excellent second round of 65 from Jason Palmer (Kirby
Muxloe) ensured it was a clean sweep of English players in
the top three individual spots but he was powerless to prevent
the second England pairing from breaking into the medal positions,
having returned a 71 in the first round coupled with Ben Parker's
(Royal Birkdale) scores of 72 and 76.
The first round of match play ties sees Morrison paired against
Cheshire's Dale Marmion, while Benson and Palmer face home
players F. Bortignoni and F. Colombo respectively. An excellent
total of nine English players qualified for the match play
stages of the tournament.
