INTERNATIONALS IN COUNTY CHAMPIONS' SHOWDOWN
David Horsey will be defending the title when the English
County Champions Tournament takes place over the Hotchkin
Course at Woodhall Spa on Saturday 23rd September.
The England international from Cheshire won the title in
style at Woodhall Spa a year ago when he created a course
record 64 in the second round for an aggregate of 12 under
par 134 and a winning seven stroke margin from the Isle of
Man’s Paul Lowey, who is also in the field.
The victory, along with other impressive performances including
victory in the West of England Stroke Play Championship, 21
year old Horsey a place in the England Elite squad and a first
cap in the international with France in Bordeaux last May.
Horsey will be last out along with Northumberland champion
George Cowan, while there are other internationals in the
field.
Gary Boyd, beaten only once in five matches on his debut
in last week’s Home Internationals in Wales, will represent
Northamptonshire, while boy cap Dale Whitnell will carry the
Essex flag.
Mike Reynard, an England international in 1996 and 1997 when
playing for Worcestershire, is in the field as the Cornish
champion, along with Bedfordshire’s John Kemp, twice
the British Mid Amateur champion, who played for England in
the 2003 Home Internationals.
William Bowe, a former under 16 international and member
of England’s winning Nations Cup team in the 2004 Czech
Amateur Championship, will represent Cumbria, while Gloucestershire
champion Chris Wood is a member of the England under 21 squad.
The champions from 30 counties will compete over 36 holes
of the testing Hotchkin Course to decide who will be crowned
the county champion of England. Besides carrying off the title,
the winner or joint winners will also gain automatic entry
into next year’s Brabazon Trophy.
The winner will also join an elite list of champions that
includes Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Peter McEvoy, and Lee Westwood.
