INTERNATIONALS IN ACTION IN SENIORS COUNTY FINALS

At least six senior internationals will be in action when the English Seniors County Championship Finals are played at Lincoln Golf Club, Torksey, on 10th - 12th October.

Most will also be playing in this week's Seniors Home Internationals at Dunbar in Scotland before switching their attention to county duty and the second quest for the English Senior County title.

The event was successfully launched a year ago at Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire when Cheshire emerged triumphant in a nail-biting finish with Kent that went to the final putt of the final match on the final green.

Cheshire and Kent are competing again along with Devon and Staffordshire and everything points to another close encounter for the best over 55 amateur golfers in the country.

Cheshire, winners from the North Region qualifying, field three senior caps in Philip Jones from Wales, Scotland's George Payne, and England captain Roy Smethurst and will probably start favourites.

Smethurst has an imperious record in seniors golf with one European, one British and four English titles to his credit not to mention a host of England caps and other domestic honours. He is the current Cheshire seniors champion having won the title in his first competition back after undergoing abdominal surgery in last May.

Kent, the South East champions, will field two England internationals in Howard Moxon and Chris Reynolds, the latter winning his first cap at Dunbar. The Kent seniors champion, Dick Seamer, is also in their team.

Devon also have a former England cap in Gordon Broster along with Terry Heard, their champion for the past two years.

The Staffordshire side, which will be led by David Thomas, a retired professor of dental surgery, includes Ben Rhodes, the brother of Jim Rhodes, a professional on the European Seniors Tour.

The Finals are contested on a round robin basis, each match consisting of three foursomes and six singles. In the first round of matches on 10th October, Devon meet Staffordshire and Kent will play Cheshire.
