HUTSBY PROMOTED TO ENGLAND 'A' SQUAD
Boys Captain Sam Hutsby and three members of this year’s
Under 21 Squad have been promoted to the ten-man England A
Squad for 2007. The squad will undergo training sessions throughout
the winter at Woodhall Spa and at Arcos Gardens in Spain.
Hutsby, a member of the Under 18 Squad last winter, has enjoyed
a successful season in which he won the Spanish Amateur Championship
as well as the recent Duke of York Junior Champions Tournament.
The trio who have moved up from the Under 21 Squad are Jamie
Abbott from Suffolk, Ben Evans from Sussex and Kent’s
James Smith. The rest of the ‘A’ Squad is Matthew
Baldwin, Luke Collins, Gareth Evans, James Morrison, John
Parry and Steven Uzzell.
Abbott, 19, marked his debut last year by helping England
to victory in the Boys Home Internationals. A former Suffolk
Open and Junior Champion, he has enjoyed a successful 2006,
finishing fourth in the Hampshire Hog and Lagonda Trophy,
tied eighth in the Brabazon Trophy and he was joint winner
of the Henriques Salver for the leading performance by a player
aged under 20.
Ben Evans, 19, a former boy cap from Rye in Sussex, won the
Sunningdale Foursomes with Danielle Masters in March and followed
that with high finishes in the West of England Stroke Play
Championship and the St Andrews Links Trophy. He also finished
tied third in the Riverswood Junior Open in Holland and in
the South of England Stroke Play Championship.
Smith, 21, another former Boy International, was Kent Champion
last year and has also been successful in 2006. He was runner-up
in the Lagonda Trophy and the Riverswood Junior Open in Holland
and sixth in the West of England Stroke Play. Last year, as
well as being Kent Champion, Smith finished fourth in the
Midland Open Amateur, while his previous successes include
victory in the 2003 Tillman Trophy and a semi-final place
in the All India Championship in 2004.
Baldwin, 20, is a former English Under 16 Champion, Lancashire
Champion and Boy International who has been a member of England’s
Elite Squad for the past two years. In 2006 he finished third
in the Scottish Open Stroke Play and the Danish Open Amateur.
Collins, 21, has been a member of the A Squad for the past
two years and this year has reached the quarterfinals of the
Spanish and Italian Open Amateur Championships and was fourth
in the Russian Amateur.
Gareth Evans, 27, is another who has had a successful 2006,
following up his victory in the Yorkshire Championship by
winning the English County Champions title.
Last year, Surrey-based Morrison, 21, won the Victoria Amateur
in Australia, reached the semi-finals of the English Amateur
and was fourth in the Finnish Amateur, while in 2006 he reached
the last 16 of the Amateur Championship, was second in the
Midland Open Amateur, and won the stroke play qualifying for
the Italian Amateur.
Parry, 19, a former boy cap, made his full England debut
against France in May and was a member of the Elite Squad
this year. He has also represented GB&I in the Jacques
Leglise Trophy, is a past winner of the McEvoy Trophy and
has finished runner-up in the Carris Trophy and the Daily
Telegraph Junior Championship. Last year proved exceptional
for the Harrogate teenager. He won the Yorkshire Championship
and the Denmark Open Amateur, which earned him an invitation
to the Vietnam Open on the Asian Tour in which he played all
four rounds.
Uzzell, 23, has been a member of Yorkshire’s English
County Championship-winning team for the past two years. The
left-hander was a member of the England B Squad - now the
Under 21 Squad - in 2004 and steps up to the A Squad for 2007.
