CARRIS CHAMPION WRIGHT NAMED IN ENGLAND UNDER 21 SQUAD
English Under 18 Stroke Play Champion Darren Wright and multiple
winners Luke Goddard and Dale Whitnell are included in the
EGU’s Under 21 Squad just announced.
The 12-strong squad also includes three teenagers from Yorkshire,
Tom Hesketh, Adam Hodkinson and Nick McCarthy, reflecting
the strength of young talent in that county. The rest of the
squad is James Curry, Miles Mackman, Sam Stuart, Adam Wainwright,
Ian Winstanley and Chris Wood.
Wright,
17 (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), from Rowlands
Castle Golf Club in Hampshire, was 11 strokes off the pace
at the halfway mark in the Carris Trophy at Sherwood Forest
but romped through the field with closing rounds of 64 and
67 to win by three. It was a splendid performance that earned
him an England debut in the Boys Home Internationals at Moray
in Scotland.
Goddard, 18, from Middlesex has enjoyed a magnificent season
with four victories. He won the Bernard Darwin Salver, the
McEvoy Trophy, the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and the
South East Junior Championship. He also represented England
in the World Boys Team Championships in Japan, the European
Boys Team Championships in Sweden as well as the Boys Home
Internationals.
Whitnell, 18, the current Essex Champion and County Boys
Champion, has also been successful in 2006. He tied second
in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, reached the last 16
of the Amateur Championship, was capped by England in the
European Boys Team Championships and for the Boys Home Internationals,
tied third in the Carris Trophy and has just won the Daily
Telegraph Junior Championship in Dubai.
Curry, the 18-year-old son of former England International
and tour professional David Curry, featured prominently at
halfway in this year’s Carris Trophy but slipped back
after a disappointing third round. A former Northumberland
Boys Champion, he won the Junior Stroke Play Championship
this year and recently broke the course record at Newbiggin
with a score of 64.
Mackman, 20, from Wiltshire, finished runner-up in the Faldo
Commemoration Jug after shooting a course record 61 at Welwyn
Garden City, while Sam Stuart, 18, finished tenth in the Carris
then helped Lancashire win the Boys County Finals at Pannal.
The trio of Yorkshire youngsters comprises Tom Hesketh, Adam
Hodkinson and Nick McCarthy, all 18 and all of whom made their
debuts as Boy Internationals this year.
Hesketh has stepped up from this year’s Under 18 Squad
after finishing joint runner-up in the McEvoy Trophy and representing
England in the World Boys Team Championships in Japan and
the European Boys Team Championships in Sweden.
Hodkinson was also in this year’s Under 18 Squad and
his promotion follows fifth place finishes in the Sir Henry
Cooper Junior Masters, ninth spot in the Carris Trophy and
a debut appearance for England in the Boys Home Internationals.
McCarthy finished sixth in the McEvoy Trophy, tied fifth
in the Carris and joint third in the Lee Westwood Trophy and
also made his debut in the Boys Home Internationals. He also
helped Yorkshire retain the English County Championship, scoring
four wins and a half from his six matches.
Wainwright, 20, is a Lincolnshire regular who played for
the county in last year’s English Finals at St Enodoc,
Winstanley, 19, is a former winner of the English Under 14
Championship and Cheshire Boys Champion, while Wood, 18, is
the current Gloucestershire Champion, who reached the quarter
finals of the recent Italian Open Amateur.
