MOOR PARK TO DONATE NEW NATIONS CUP FOR CARRIS TROPHY
The
English Golf Union is to introduce a Nations Cup competition
within the Boys Under 18 Championship for the Carris Trophy
and Moor Park Golf Club (pictured left - photo courtesy of
Moor Park Golf Club) in Hertfordshire, has generously agreed
to donate the trophy.
A nations Cup was introduced into the Boys Under 16 Open
Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the McGregor Trophy last
year and has proved a huge success. This year at Worthing
14 teams from eight nations competed with the two English
teams sharing the title.
The Under 18 Championship has also become a truly international
competition over the past decade with the title going abroad
three times in that period. So the introduction of a Nations
Cup is a natural progression.
Moor Park was the ‘home’ of the Carris Trophy
from its inception in 1935 until 1988 when it was decided
to move the competition around the country. However, the link
with Moor Park has been maintained in that the championship
returns there every four years, the most recent being in 2005.
That link will be more deeply forged with Moor Park generously
donating a new trophy, to be called ‘The Moor Park Trophy’,
and an official from the club will attend the Carris Trophy
each year to present it.
The Carris Nations Cup will follow similar lines to that
of the McGregor Trophy. Countries will be allowed to enter
up to two teams of three players, the event will be played
over the first 36 holes and will be decided by the aggregate
of the best two from three scores each round. In the event
of a tie the trophy will be shared.
