BENSON AND RICHARDSON OFF TO ARGENTINA
Seve
Benson and Ed Richardson, two of the EGU’s Elite Squad,
will be England’s representatives in the Juan Carlos
Tailhade Cup in Argentina next month.
The pair will tackle the annual tournament at its traditional
home, the Los Lagartos Country Club in Buenos Aires, on 7th
- 10th December.
Benson’s selection rounds off a highly successful season
for the 20 year old from Wentworth. After promising displays
in the Berkhamsted Trophy and the Scottish Open Stroke Play
Championship, Benson (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom
Ward) won the Russian Open Amateur in Moscow which provided
him with the opprtunity to play in the Russian Open, a European
Tour event, in which he finished tied 10th. He also finished
as the second qualifier in the Italian Amateur, reaching the
last 16 of the match play stage and he was a member of the
Surrey side that finished third in the English County Finals
at Prince’s.
Richardson, 38, from the Southern Valley Golf Club in Kent,
has been a full England cap for the past two years, having
made his debut in the 2005 Home Internationals at Royal St
George’s. A former winner of the West of England Stroke
Play, he won the Midland Open Amateur Championship this summer
while also finishing fourth in the Tillman Trophy and tied
sixth in the Berkshire Trophy.
English golfers have a proud record in this 72-hole, two-man
team event in which both players’ scores count, winning
three times in four years.
In 2000, Nick Dougherty and Gary Wolstenholme were triumphant,
succeeded in 2001 by Zane Scotland and David Skinns, while
in 2003 Gary Lockerbie and Michael Skelton were victorious.
Lee Corfield and Matthew Richardson finished runners-up in
2004.
