McEVOY TROPHY WINNER GODDARD EARNS TRIP TO JAPAN
Luke
Goddard has been rewarded for his superb victory in the Peter
McEvoy Trophy by being named in the four-strong England team
to compete in the World Boys Team Championships in Japan next
month.
The 18 year old from Middlesex (pictured left - photo courtesy
of Tom Ward) carded a closing 70 for 278, six under par, to
win the McEvoy at Copt Heath, finishing four strokes ahead
of Sam Hutsby, James Watts, and Tom Hesketh, who complete
the team for the Championships being staged at Chukyo Golf
Club, Toyota City, Aichi-Ken, on 20th - 23rd June.
Goddard, from the Hendon club, has enjoyed a swift rise up
the golfing ladder this year. Little known outside his county
and not a member of any England training squad, he gave notice
of intent by winning the Bernard Darwin Salver by two strokes
at Rye and maintained that form to lift the McEvoy, a significant
scalp in the junior game.
Hesketh, 18, from the Oakdale club in Yorkshire, was an under
16 cap in 2004, having reached the fifth round of the British
Boys Championship. Last year he was a member of the winning
Yorkshire team in the Boys County Championships and is now
a member of the England under 18 training squad.
Hutsby, 17, from the Lee on Solent club in Hampshire, has
been on the international scene for the past two years. Capped
at under 16 level in 2004, he finished joint runner-up in
last year’s Carris Trophy, tied third in the Sir Henry
Cooper Junior Masters and equal fourth in the South East Boys
Qualifying. After stepping up to boys’ level, Hutsby
was a member of England’s victorious Boys Home Internationals
squad and also represented the EGU in the German and Dutch
Junior Masters.
However, his greatest success to date came earlier this year
when he won the Spanish Amateur Championship with a stunning
7&6 victory over Eduardo Molinari from Italy, the US Amateur
champion, in the 36-hole final.
Watts, 18, from East Herts, is another former under 16 cap,
having played against Scotland and Spain in 2004 after finishing
tied fifth in the English Under 16 Championship for the McGregor
Trophy. Last year he won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters,
helped England win the Boys Home Internationals, and accompanied
Hutsby to the German and Dutch Junior Masters as well as representing
the EGU in the Turkish Amateur.
This will be England’s 12th appearance in the World
Junior Team Championships. They were winners in 1998, ’99
and 2002, runners-up once and third three times including
last year behind the United States and Colombia.
The England team is:
Luke Goddard (Hendon)
Tom Hesketh (Oakdale)
Sam Hutsby (Lee on Solent)
James Watts (East Herts)
