Evans leads first day qualifying at Brabazon
Yorkshireman Gareth Evans headed the field in the first qualifying
round of the Brabazon Trophy at Ganton in north Yorkshire.
Evans, 26, comes from the Northcliffe club in Bradford and
his 67, four under par, gave him a one stroke lead over the
field on a day that was generally fine but which turned wet
in late afternoon. With the leading 16 players and ties qualifying
from today and tomorrow’s qualifying, Evans is assured
of a place in the competition proper which gets underway on
Friday.
Evans’ nearest pursuers were Dale Whitnell from Essex
and Gloucestershire’s Shane Winstone on 68, Winstone’s
card being highlighted by a hole-in-one at the 171-yard tenth
hole.
Whitnell, who embarks on his maiden EGU overseas visit next
week for a junior tournament in Sweden, had four birdies in
his 68 and would have tied the lead with Evans but for a last
hole bogey.
Two players returned 69, Chris McDonnell, former Northumberland
champion, and Kent’s James Cameron.
A total of 17 players qualified with scores of 71 or better.
