ENGLAND START WITH CONFIDENCE ON DAY 1 IN FRANCE
In stark contrast to the two practice days the weather at
the start of the international between England and France
began in overcast conditions with thunderstorms forecast for
the afternoon.
From the opening shot of the match, played by Gary Wolstenholme
who, with customary accuracy, found the middle of the tight
fairway, the first pairing of Wolstenholme and Jamie Moul
proved to be too strong for their French opposition. Although
they were pegged back from being five up early on they still
ran out comfortable winners.
David Horsey and Paul Waring also proved too strong for their
French opponents with debutant international Horsey looking
like a seasoned campaigner.
The English did not have it all their own way, with Ed Richardson
and Adam Gee managing just a half on the eighteenth. Their
match was watched by proud father Peter Richardson, who commented
that the French putt on the last green was noticeably longer
than a cricket pitch. As a former test cricketer his judgment
was absolutely correct – the French three putted from
29 yards.
Putting difficulties also contributed to the defeat of Robert
Dinwiddie and John Parry who failed to convert birdie opportunities
and paid the price losing 3 and 2.
