England Reign Supreme in France

Heavy overnight rain and continuing thunder storms delayed the start of day two by an hour. However, with softer greens and little run on the fairways the Golf du Medoc course was an easier prospect that of the previous day.

Star of Day 1, Gary Wolstenholme found himself in the unusual position of being three down at the turn and despite playing a series of pin slitting shots, he and Jamie Moul couldn’t quite erase the deficit.

David Horsey and Paul Waring, playing probably the best scoring match of the second day morning, lost a two hole lead to a run of birdies from Julien Grillion and Victon Debuisson, eventually going down by one hole.

It was left to Robert Dinwiddie and Matthew Cryer to show what the English team were capable of with a 5 and 4 win. Ed Richardson and Adam Gee were the last English pairing to go out and Gee sank a ten footer for a birdie on hole seventeen and then coolly holed from four feet to secure a hard earned half point.

The result of the morning foursomes meant that England needed two and a half points from the eight singles in the afternoon to gain victory in the match.

Apart from an early set backin the first singles when John Parry lost 4 and 3, England, the current European Champions, underlined their strength in depth of the squad.

Wolstenholme’s knowledge of the course was of considerable help as he took a fine win over Julien Guerrier. Moul, Wolstenholme's foursomes partner of the morning, soon followed with a one hole victory.

Waring’s match against Alexandre Kaleka was one of a very high quality with holes won or halved with birdies, a half was a fair result. Debutant international Horsey was also on the winning trail with a convincing 4 and 2 result. Gee kept English supporters on their toes when he turned a three hole deficit at the turn into a final 2 and 1 win with an impressive back nine.

Richardson’s relentless accuracy paid off with a handsome 5 and 4 win and, despite the result of the overall match being already decided, the final icing on the gateau was a class performance from Dinwiddie in the last match.

Cec Bloice England Captain commented, "To win against France in France is a considerable achievement. The French team are always a tough proposition especially when playing in front of their home supporters.”
