EGU ANNOUNCE REVISED 2006 PING/EGU ORDER OF MERIT
The English Golf Union have announced details of this years
PING/EGU Order of Merit kindly sponsored by PING Europe.
The new schedule has undergone a complete revision since the
completion of the 2005 PING/EGU Order of Merit, which was
won in fine style by Gary Lockerbie. English amateur golfers
will now have the opportunity to pick up points in 10 further
events throughout the season and more golfers will appear
on the leaderboard as a result of the increased flexibility
adopted in acknowledging finishing positions.
EGU Director of Coaching, Peter Mattsson, commented, “The
PING/EGU Order of Merit has undergone a complete review for
the first time in it’s three year history. We have considered
a number of options from compiling a completely new ranking
of English amateur golfers in every event, to emulating the
professionals’ World Rankings and European Order of
Merit. In the end we have decided to expand on our current
event list and increase the flexibility in the awarding of
points.”
The purpose of the PING/EGU Order of Merit is to provide a
recognised schedule of events in which the top English amateur
golfers can compete. The list of players produced is not intended
to form a strict ranking of English amateurs by ability but
the updates of the PING/EGU Order of Merit will be used as
a guideline by the England Selectors as are several other
ranking systems in existence within amateur golf.
PING Europe Marketing Manager, Dave Fanning, added “PING
are delighted to continue our support of the EGU Order of
Merit. The standard of our elite amateur golfers continues
to improve year on year and we are proud to be associated
with recognising those who continue to really perform throughout
the season.”
2006 promises to be a very competitive year with an exciting
schedule ahead. The latest PING/EGU Order of Merit updates
can be found on the England Teams section of the EGU website
