WOLSTENHOLME WINS EUROPEAN MID AMATEUR TITLE
Gary Wolstenholme won his first European Mid Amateur Championship
when he successfully overcame Jakob Thomsen of Denmark at
the Grand Ducal Golf Club in Luxembourg.
The pair had finished tied on 210 after 54 holes but Wolstenholme
prevailed at the first play off hole. Minutes earlier it seemed
that the England international would have to settle for his
second runners-up spot in the event as, with three holes to
play, Thomsen was leading by two and looking the likely winner.
However, Wolstenholme (pictured left - photo courtesy of
Tom Ward) secured the two birdies he needed to tie and went
on to win the championship with a par at the first extra hole.
Former England cap Roger Roper finished third, three strokes
out of the play off, while Midlander Paul Griffiths, joint
holder of the English Mid Amateur title, was equal fourth
on 214.
Wolstenholme’s second place came at Hollinwell in 2000
behind Francois Illouz, the veteran French international.
