McGOWAN AND BALDWIN SEEK TO KEEP DANISH TITLE IN ENGLAND
Ross McGowan will hope his luck changes after he and Matthew
Baldwin were selected to contest the Danish International
Amateur Championship at Silkeborg Golf Club on 1st and 2nd
July.
McGowan
(pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), a member of
the England A Squad, has finished runner-up on four occasions
in Britain this year without collecting a title. So hopefully
his luck will change on foreign soil.
A year ago, England international John Parry won the Danish
title at Silkeborg, a victory that earned him entry to the
Vietnam Open on the Asian Tour, in which he played all four
rounds, and the Thomas Bjorn Open which is taking place this
this week 8th – 11th June.
McGowan, 24, from the Banstead Downs club in Surrey, has finished
second in the Berk! hamsted Trophy, the West of England Stroke
Play, the Brabazon Trophy and the Scottish Open Amateur Stroke
Play over the past two months which underlines his consistency.
A graduate of college golf in Tennessee, McGowan has also
tasted success. He won the St Mellion International in 2003
and last summer became the inaugural winner of the South of
England Stroke Play Championship at Walton Heath as well as
reaching the quarter finals of the English Amateur.
Baldwin, an Elite Squad member, is a former England under
16 champion, Lancashire champion and England Boy Captain,
who has been on the international scene for the past six years.
He has been capped at under 16 and boys levels and has also
represented GB&I against Europe in the Jacques Leglise
Trophy. This year the 20 year old from Royal Birkdale has
won the Formby Hare and finished tied third in the recent
Scottish Open Amateur Stroke Play.
The Danish Amateur is played over 54 holes of stroke play,
the first two rounds on the opening day, with a cut after
two rounds, the leading 30 players and ties going through
to the final ! 18 holes.
