Fisher wins St Andrews Links Trophy
Teenage
international Oliver Fisher secured the first major men's
title of his career when he won the St Andrews Links Trophy
on a hot and windy day over the Old Course.
A closing round of 73 for 280, seven under par, gave him
a two-shot winning margin over Australian Stephen Dartnall
with playing partner Keir McNicoll from Carnoustie third on
284.
After a morning 71 on the Old Course, his third successive
sub-par return, Fisher (pictured - photo courtesy of Tom Ward)
started the final round with a three-shot lead from Dartnall
and fellow England international Robert Dinwiddie, and held
off all challengers.
The 17 year old from West Essex GC, is a TASS (Talented Athlete
Scholarship Scheme) 2012 athlete, benefits from England Elite
Squad coaching and was the youngest ever GB&I player in
last year’s Walker Cup in Chicago. His strength of character
certainly showed through in St Andrews to land the prestigious
top prize.
Dinwiddie, who won the Brabazon Trophy last month, eventually
finished joint fifth on 286 after a closing 76, while England
boy cap Ben Evans from Sussex was a shot further back after
a closing 72.
