Young trio off to Chiberta Grand Prix
Jamie Abbott, the Boy International from Suffolk, James Freeman
from Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire’s Rob Harris
will represent the EGU in the annual Chiberta Grand Prix in
Biarritz, France, on 13th - 16th July.
Abbott
(pictured - photo courtesy of Tom Ward) has just turned 19
and made his England debut in the team that won the Boys Home
Internationals at Woodhall Spa last August. A former Suffolk
Open and Junior Champion and winner of the individual title
in the South East Boys Qualifying at Bedford last year, Abbott
is enjoying a successful 2006. He finished fourth in the Hampshire
Hog, tied eighth in the Brabazon Trophy but was joint winner
of the Henriques Salver for the leading performance by a player
aged under 20, and was equal fourth in the Lagonda Trophy.
Freeman, who will turn 24 on 6th July, has been a regular
in the Nottinghamshire team for several years. This will be
his first EGU representative honour and follows some promising
performances this year. He was tied 16th in the St Andrews
Links, and after pre-qualifing for the Brabazon Trophy, played
all four rounds, finishing tied 23rd.
Harris, 20, is a former Midland boy champion and, like Abbott,
a member of the England Under 21 Training Squad. He has represented
Lincolnshire in the English County Boys Finals in 2003 and
in the English County Finals at St Enodoc last September and
reached the last 16 of the Spanish Amateur earlier this year.
The Chiberta competition is medal stroke play over 72 holes
with a halfway cut. There is also a team event over the first
two days, the best two of the three cards to count.
England has enjoyed recent success in the tournament. Two
years ago, England International James Crampton won the Chiberta
Grand Prix on his first visit.
