Sharpe seeks title double in Carris Trophy
Oscar
Sharpe, the newly crowned English under 16 champion, will
bid to make it a double with the under 18 title in the Carris
Trophy at Sherwood Forest Golf Club in Nottinghamshire on
25th - 27th July.
The 13 year old (pictured - photo courtesy of Tom Ward) was
impressive in winning the McGregor Trophy at Worthing earlier
this month but he will find the opposition tougher and more
experienced this time. The leading ten from the under 16 championship
gain automatic entry to the Carris which means Sharpe will
be joined by runner-up Eddie Pepperell and third-placed Stiggy
Hodgson.
However, almost all of the England under 18 training squad
plus the England boys team currently contesting the European
Boys Team Championships in Sweden, are in the 132-strong field
so the quality will be high.
A year ago Thomas Haylock won the title at Moor Park but
he is now too old to defend. However, some of those who chased
him home are again competing including Sam Hutsby from Hampshire,
Dorset’s Luke Joy and Tom Oliver from Nottingham.
Also in the field is Luke Goddard, who has already won three
junior titles this year. The 18 year old from Middlesex won
the Darwin Salver at Rye, the McEvoy Trophy at Copt Heath,
and the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters at Nizels.
Once again the tournament has attracted a class field including
players from Belgium, Finland, Italy, Holland, Norway, Qatar
and Spain.
The entire field, which will be reduced to the leading 45
and ties after 36 holes, possess a handicap of one or better.
Previous winners of the Carris Trophy include Sandy Lyle,
Peter Baker, Ken Brown and Justin Rose.
