England Teams share top spot in Nations Cup
England carried off the Nations Cup decided over the opening
two rounds of the McGregor Trophy when their two teams shared
top spot at Worthing.
With the best two scores from three each day to count, both
squads finished on 295, one ahead of Spain 1, who filled third
place.
England 2 led on 145 (Billy Downing 71, Eddie Pepperell 74)
after day one, three clear of England 1 (Darren Renwick 74,
Adam Myers 74), with Spain 1, Wales 2 and Scotland 1 on 150.
With Tommy Fleetwood returning 73 and Myers another 74, England
1 made up the gap on their compatriots as Pepperell shot 72
and Tom Berry 78.
At the same time Spain 1 mounted a challenge with Jordi Garcia
Pinto carding a level par 71 and Carlos Pigem-Xammer 75 for
the best second day aggregate. But they came up a shot shy,
finishing on 296.
England team manager Tommy Flinn said: “Conditions
were tricky on both days but both teams knew what they had
to do and played solidly. Everyone played a part but the Spanish
got a bit close at the end." He continued, “With
both teams finishing level made it a unique occasion.”
