Seve Benson wins Russian Amateur for England
England players took the top two places at the Russian Open
Amateur Championship which took place at the Le Meridian Moscow
Country Club this week.
Seve Benson, who based at the Wentworth club, added another
overseas victory to his career by winning the event with a
7 under par score after four rounds. After sitting in fourth
position at the end of round 1, he took the lead the following
day and played consistently with scores of 70, 70 and 71 to
finish one shot ahead of his team mate, Matthew Cryer. Benson
can now add the Russian Amateur to his other international
results, Seve finished runner-up in the Swiss Amateur and
fourth in the German Amateur last year
Cryer, who was also acting as team manager, returned below
par scores, 70, 68 and 71 on the final three days, to finish
with a total of 282 for the four day tournament.
Luke Collins, from the Mendip Spring club in Somerset, finished
in joint fourth place after leading the event through days
1 and 2. A wayward round of 77 on day 3 proved to be a set
back and in spite of a 4 under par 68 on the final day he
remained 4 shots behind the leader Benson.
