England takes top prize at Costa Ballena
England's first team victory of 2006 is already secured.
England overcame opposition from teams representing Finland,
Germany and Spain to win the Costa Ballena Quadrangular match
in Spain for the second year in succession.
The Costa Ballena competition is played on a round robin
basis, each match comprising three morning foursomes and six
afternoon singles. The last day of the competition was affected
by heavy rain that became so bad that the afternoon's single
matches had to be cancelled.
Combined scores from day one saw England defeat Finland 5-4.
On day two, in spite of winning all their morning foursomes,
England suffered a 5-4 loss against Spain. On the final day,
Friday 27th January, with all to play for, the team rallied
convincingly to again win all their foursomes in the last
match against Germany.
The final positions for the tournament were, England 4 points,
Germany 3 points, Spain 3 points and Finland 2 points.
The win will bring an early confidence boost as well as valuable
overseas experience to take forward to future events in 2006.
