CARRIS CHAMPION WRIGHT IN BOYS HOME INTERNATIONALS SQUAD
Darren Wright, the newly crowned English Boy Champion, has
been rewarded with a place in the England team that will defend
the Boys Home Internationals at Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth,
Scotland on 8th - 10th August.
Wright, 17, was impressive in winning the under 18 title for
the Carris Trophy at Sherwood Forest last week with closing
rounds of 64 and 67 and is one of seven new caps in the 11-strong
team
The full England team is: Bill Fowles (Wentworth), Luke Goddard
(Hendon), Jack Hiluta (Chelmsford), Adam Hodkinson (Hallowes),
Sam Hutsby (Lee-on-the-Solent), Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex),
Nick McCarthy (Moortown), Tom Oliver (Notts), Eddie Pepperell
(Frilford Heath), Dale Whitnell (Forrester Park), and Darren
Wright (Rowlands Castle). Reserve: James Watts (East Herts).
Apart from Wright, the other new caps are Fowles, Hiluta,
Hodkinson, Johnston, McCarthy, and Pepperell.
Fowles, 16, finished joint fifth behind Wright in the Carris
Trophy, having equalled the course record at Littlestone while
helping Surrey win the South East Group Qualifying last month.
Last year, he finished runner-up in the Scottish Under 16
Championship, and he recently won the South East title in
the English Schools Championship.
Hiluta, 17, represented Essex in last year’s Boys County
Finals at Little Aston and finished tied sixth in the recent
Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters after a third place in the
Essex Under 25 Championship.
Hodkinson, 18, from Yorkshire is a former under 16 international
who reached the fifth round of the British Boys Championship
last year and finished fifth in this year’s Sir Henry
Cooper Junior Masters.
Johnston, 17, has been successful in his home county of Middlesex
and finished tied fourth in last year’s McGregor Trophy,
having represented England in the Nations Cup in that event.
An under 16 cap last year, he finished runner-up in the South
East Boys Qualifying.
McCarthy, 18, helped Yorkshire win the Boys County Championship
last year and this year he finished sixth in the McEvoy Trophy
and joint fifth in the Carris Trophy.
Pepperell is the youngest member of the team at 15 but has
already achieved considerable success. He won the English
Under 14 Championship at Bristol & Clifton last year after
winning the Berks, Bucks & Oxon under 14 title. This year,
the Frilford Heath player finished second in the English Under
16 Championship for the McGregor Trophy at Worthing and was
a member of one of the winning Nations Cup teams.
The team will be captained by Hutsby, 17, who started the
year by winning the Spanish Amateur Championship, beating
Eduardo Molinari from Italy, the US Amateur champion, 7&6
over 36 holes. Since then, Hutsby has finished joint runner-up
in the McEvoy Trophy, fourth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior
Masters, and represented England in the World Junior Team
Championships in Japan and the recent European Boys Team Championships
in Sweden.
He and Oliver are the only members of the side who played
in last year’s Boys Home Internationals at Woodhall
Spa, both having represented England in this year’s
European Boys Team Championships in Sweden.
Goddard, 18, has burst through this year with four victories.
He has won the Bernard Darwin Salver, the McEvoy Trophy, the
Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and the South East Junior
Qualifying. He also represented England in the World Junior
Team Championships in Japan and the European Boys Team Championships.
Whitnell, who will turn 18 during the Boys Home Internationals,
is also enjoying a successful 2006 with joint second place
in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, third place in the
Carris Trophy and reached the last 16 of the Amateur Championship
before being beaten by Gary Wolstenholme. Whitnell also made
his England debut in the European Boys Team Championships.
England will be defending an unbeaten run in the Boys Home
Internationals which goes back eight years. Previous to that
Ireland were the winners in 1997.
