CARRIS CHAMPION WRIGHT IN BOYS HOME INTERNATIONALS SQUAD

Darren Wright, the newly crowned English Boy Champion, has been rewarded with a place in the England team that will defend the Boys Home Internationals at Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth, Scotland on 8th - 10th August.

Wright, 17, was impressive in winning the under 18 title for the Carris Trophy at Sherwood Forest last week with closing rounds of 64 and 67 and is one of seven new caps in the 11-strong team

The full England team is: Bill Fowles (Wentworth), Luke Goddard (Hendon), Jack Hiluta (Chelmsford), Adam Hodkinson (Hallowes), Sam Hutsby (Lee-on-the-Solent), Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex), Nick McCarthy (Moortown), Tom Oliver (Notts), Eddie Pepperell (Frilford Heath), Dale Whitnell (Forrester Park), and Darren Wright (Rowlands Castle). Reserve: James Watts (East Herts).

Apart from Wright, the other new caps are Fowles, Hiluta, Hodkinson, Johnston, McCarthy, and Pepperell.

Fowles, 16, finished joint fifth behind Wright in the Carris Trophy, having equalled the course record at Littlestone while helping Surrey win the South East Group Qualifying last month. Last year, he finished runner-up in the Scottish Under 16 Championship, and he recently won the South East title in the English Schools Championship.

Hiluta, 17, represented Essex in last year’s Boys County Finals at Little Aston and finished tied sixth in the recent Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters after a third place in the Essex Under 25 Championship.

Hodkinson, 18, from Yorkshire is a former under 16 international who reached the fifth round of the British Boys Championship last year and finished fifth in this year’s Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters.

Johnston, 17, has been successful in his home county of Middlesex and finished tied fourth in last year’s McGregor Trophy, having represented England in the Nations Cup in that event. An under 16 cap last year, he finished runner-up in the South East Boys Qualifying.

McCarthy, 18, helped Yorkshire win the Boys County Championship last year and this year he finished sixth in the McEvoy Trophy and joint fifth in the Carris Trophy.

Pepperell is the youngest member of the team at 15 but has already achieved considerable success. He won the English Under 14 Championship at Bristol & Clifton last year after winning the Berks, Bucks & Oxon under 14 title. This year, the Frilford Heath player finished second in the English Under 16 Championship for the McGregor Trophy at Worthing and was a member of one of the winning Nations Cup teams.

The team will be captained by Hutsby, 17, who started the year by winning the Spanish Amateur Championship, beating Eduardo Molinari from Italy, the US Amateur champion, 7&6 over 36 holes. Since then, Hutsby has finished joint runner-up in the McEvoy Trophy, fourth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, and represented England in the World Junior Team Championships in Japan and the recent European Boys Team Championships in Sweden.

He and Oliver are the only members of the side who played in last year’s Boys Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa, both having represented England in this year’s European Boys Team Championships in Sweden.

Goddard, 18, has burst through this year with four victories. He has won the Bernard Darwin Salver, the McEvoy Trophy, the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and the South East Junior Qualifying. He also represented England in the World Junior Team Championships in Japan and the European Boys Team Championships.

Whitnell, who will turn 18 during the Boys Home Internationals, is also enjoying a successful 2006 with joint second place in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, third place in the Carris Trophy and reached the last 16 of the Amateur Championship before being beaten by Gary Wolstenholme. Whitnell also made his England debut in the European Boys Team Championships.

England will be defending an unbeaten run in the Boys Home Internationals which goes back eight years. Previous to that Ireland were the winners in 1997.
