SHARPE TO MAKE HIS ENGLAND DEBUT AGAINST SPAIN
Oscar Sharpe (Minchinhampton), the 2006 English Boys Under
16 Champion, has been selected along with three more of the
country’s brightest talents to form the England team
to face Spain in the annual one-day Under 16 International
at Heswall Golf Club, Cheshire, on 22nd August.
The rest of the team is Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall), Adam
Myers (Northants County), and Darren Renwick (Worthing).
Sharpe, who will be 14 in September, was impressive in winning
the McGregor Trophy at Worthing last month and he followed
that with victory in the Douglas Johns Trophy at Harewood
Downs.
Fleetwood and Myers, both 15, were England team-mates in the
Nations Cup during the McGregor Trophy when their squad finished
joint winners with another England team.
Fleetwood (pictured left - photo courtesy of Tom Ward), from
Lancashire, was capped at under 16 level last autumn against
Scotland Under 16s and against the England Girls under 18
team.
Besides winning the English Under 16 Championship last year
when only 14, Myers was also runner-up in the Northamptonshire
County Championship, tied fourth in the Reid Trophy and was
capped at under 16 level against Spain, Scotland and the England
Under 18 Girls.
Renwick, 16, is arguably the most experienced of the quartet.
He finished fourth in this year’s McGregor Trophy over
his home course at Worthing, having been capped at under 16
level for the past two years. In 2005, he won the Scottish
Under 16 Championship and the Douglas Johns Trophy as well
as finishing tied third in the South East Junior Championship.
This will be the fourth playing of the international with
Spain, England having won two with one tie. The match is decided
over two foursomes and four singles matches.
