KUBER STRIKES GOLD WITH SOME HELP FROM LUKE

Teenager Marc Kuber’s practise rounds with boy international Luke Goddard paid dividends as he won the EGU Gold Medal in style at Woodhall Spa over the weekend.

Kuber, the 15 year old from the same club, Hendon, as Goddard, piled up 40 Stableford points in his second round over the Bracken Course for a winning tally of 76, three ahead of Thomas Beetham from Yorkshire and five clear of Cheshire’s Sam Leach.

“This is a tremendous thrill,” said Kuber. “This is the biggest competition I’ve won and I can’t tell you what this will do for me. Hopefully it will help me progress on the county scene in Middlesex.”

Kuber, who had his father Lloyd as caddie, started the second and final round in joint third place, two points behind John Mayers from Lancashire.

But while Mayers put together a decent round of 32 points for a total of 70, Kuber, off a handicap of six, went round in a gross 74 strokes with 21 points on his back nine. “I hit the ball solidly all day but the difference was that I made some putts this time. When I arrived here I was playing well and everything depended on my putting. Fortunately, I holed from around 40 feet for birdie on the long sixth and I also sank a 20 footer for another birdie at the par four 13th. I also made some key putts for pars.

“All the nights of practise over the winter have paid dividends. I play quite a lot with Luke and I have learned a lot from him. I hope I can be as successful as he is.”

Beetham, from the Bingley St Ives club, added 37 points to his opening 36 for second spot, while Leach finished with 71 after signing for 34.

Christopher Murphy from Cheshire, was one of three players to score 38 points, which helped him finish fourth on countback from Thomas Caldicott from nearby Rutland who returned 34 points for fifth. The others with 38 points were Jordan Howard from Yorkshire with a total of 69, and Bristol-based Matt Bridgewater with 68.

Overnight leader Mayers from Lancashire just missed out on the prizes as did Richard Austin, both on 70.
