RENWICK LEADS ENGLAND TO IMPRESSIVE VICTORY OVER SWEDES
Darren Renwick played a captain’s role in leading a
young England boys regional team to an impressive 4½
- 3½ victory over an accomplished Swedish team in a
one-day friendly international at the Marriott Meon Valley
Golf & Country Club, near Southampton.
Renwick was made skipper for the day and led from the front,
winning both his matches in what was an outstanding performance
against an older, more experienced and physically stronger
Swedish side.
With two foursomes and one single making up the morning matches,
Renwick took on Robin Wingårdh, the Swedes number one,
and eased to a two-hole victory.
The two foursomes were shared, Tom Berry (Wentworth) and
Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath) gaining the English side’s
other victory to leave them 2-1 ahead at lunch.
Looking for some quick points, Sweden put their leading players
out first in the afternoon singles but although Wingårdh
gained an early advantage against Hodgson, going two up at
one stage, the 15 year old from Sunningdale hit back to gain
an impressive 4 and 3 victory.
The next two singles went Sweden’s way - Pepperell
losing on the 18th green - to make the overall score 3-3,
while Berry gained a superb half against Fihn, the Swedish
under 16 champion.
So it was left to Renwick to tip the balance England’s
way. Out in the bottom match, the 16 year old from Worthing
was always in control against Jacobsson and won comfortably
6 and 5.
"Although our lads were giving away age, height and
length, this was an impressive performance," said Tommy
Flinn, who managed the England side.
"The boys were a credit to themselves, their counties
and England and this shows we have a great amount of talent
coming through with our young players."
