FINAL DAY DISAPPOINTMENT LEAVES ENGLAND IN THIRD SPOT
England finished in third place and collected the bronze
medal in the Sherry Cup after a disappointing fourth and final
day at Sotogrande in Spain.
The team went into the day in pole position, two strokes clear
of Spain and eight ahead of Wales, but none of the four players
matched par, allowing Spain to take the title on 848, nine
strokes clear of Wales with England on 860.
England made a bright start to the event and, with three scores
to count each round, led on day one with 214 by a shot from
Wales. The margin was still a stroke after day two, England
on 429 while the Spanish had caught the Welsh on 430.
England contributed three sub-par rounds on day three for
636 to extend their advantage to two strokes from Spain, while
Wales had slipped back to 644. Seeking to regain the title
they lost a year ago, England had built a confident base for
a final push.
However, it wasn‘t to be, Robert Dinwiddie producing
the best round with 73, Gary Wolstenholme 75 and Jamie Moul
76.
Oliver Fisher also shot 76, his worst return of the week,
for 288 which saw him slip from joint second to equal eighth
in the individual standings, while his team-mates shared 12th
spot on 290.
Welshman Nigel Edwards extended his recent fine run by taking
the title after edging out Spain’s Jose Luis Adarraga
in a sudden death playoff after both had finished on six under
par 282.
