County Champions Set For Woodhall Spa Showdown
The champions from 32 counties will compete over 36 holes
of the testing Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa on Saturday
17th September to decide who will be crowned the county champion
of England.
The entry list contains former England boy international,
John Parry, representing Yorkshire, 2004 Logan Trophy winner
Steve Sansome (Leicestershire), plus members of various England
squads.
Parry, 18, is one of the country’s finest young prospects.
A former boy cap, he won the McEvoy Trophy last year and finished
second in the Carris Trophy and the Daily Telegraph Junior
Championship. Apart from the Yorkshire title, Parry recently
won the Danish Amateur Championship.
The field also includes Ryan Henley (Hampshire), winner of
the Selborne and Hampshire Salvers this year, David Horsey
(Cheshire), runner-up in last year’s English Amateur
Championship, and Rob Harris (Lincolnshire), a former Midland
boy champion.
Lloyd Kennedy, twice the Essex champion and winner of the
Faldo Commemoration Jug for the past two years, could be one
of the favourites, as could former Scottish international
Sandy Twynholm (Northumberland), a semi-finalist this year
in the Scottish Amateur.
Among the other younger entrants are former boy cap James
Smith (Kent) and current boy international Oliver Turnill
(Sussex).
There are two county champions not taking part. Suffolk’s
Jamie Moul, just back from representing England in the Home
Internationals, and Surrey champion Farren Keenan, who is
at college in America.
Besides carrying off the title, the winner or joint winners
will also gain automatic entry into next year’s Brabazon
Trophy.
The winner will also join an elite list of champions that
includes Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Peter McEvoy, and Lee Westwood.
