TEENAGE TRIO HEAD FOR TURKISH AMATEUR

Three of England’s most promising youngsters will extend their experience of international competition after being selected to play in the Turkish Amateur Championship at Klassis Golf and Country Club near Istanbul on 29th September - 2nd October.

The threesome is Sam Hutsby from Hampshire, Nottinghamshire‘s Tom Oliver, and James Watts from Hertfordshire. The non-travelling reserve is Dale Smith from Yorkshire.

Hutsby, a former under 16 international from Hampshire, is enjoying a successful season. He won the Courage Trophy in his home county, then finished third in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters. The 16 year old was always challenging in the English Boys under 18 Championship for the Carris Trophy at Moor Park, eventually finishing joint runner-up. This earned him a call-up for the Boys Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa in which he won four of his six matches, two on the crucial final day when England retained the title.

Oliver, 17, another former under 16 cap, represented the EGU in last year’s European Young Masters in Austria and reached the last 16 in the English Amateur Championship over his home course at Hollinwell. He was a member of the England squad in this year’s European Boys Team Championships in Italy after finishing tied third in the McEvoy Trophy. He was eighth in the Carris Trophy and was also a member of the winning England team in the Boys Home Internationals.

Watts was capped at under 16 level against Spain and Scotland last year after finishing joint fifth in the McGregor Trophy. The 17 year old secured his biggest success to date when he won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters in June, while he secured five points from six in the Boys Home Internationals.

All three players represented the English Golf Union in the recent German and Dutch Junior Masters, all achieving top ten finishes. In the latter event, for under 21s, Hutsby and Oliver finished joint second.

The Turkish Amateur is played over 72 holes of stroke play with a cut after 36 holes.

The squad for Turkey is:
Sam Hutsby (Lee on Solent)
Tom Oliver (Notts)
James Watts (East Herts)
Reserve: Dale Smith (Saltburn)
