English Champion Club Rotherham take on Europe
After their run away win in the English Champion Club event
at the end of August the team from Rotherham Golf Club are
now preparing for their next challenge in the European Club
Cup Trophy in Turkey at the Klassis Golf and Country Club
from 13th – 15th October.
The Yorkshire trio of Sam Haywood, James Mason and Neil Walker
finished 18 strokes clear of the rest of the field bringing
the English Champion Club title back to Yorkshire after a
10-year absence. That win entitles them to a place in the
European Club Cup.
Sadly James Mason will unfortunately be away on England ‘A’
Training and his place will be taken by Matt Evans, the current
Yorkshire Boys Captain. Matt has had an excellent year, winning
the Sheffield Plate, York Rose Bowl and he has also represented
England, Europe and GB & NI Boys.
Neil Walker will also hope to replicate his excellent English
Champion Club form when he returned a best-of-the-day 68 on
day one and provided a second round 65, which contained seven
birdies.
Sam Haywood is the youngest of the team but is used to contributing
to team success, as he was also a member of the victorious
Yorkshire Boys Team who took the English Boys County Finals
last month.
The final member of the team is the travelling reserve Jack
Walker, which makes it a bit of family affair.
The European Club Cup is currently held by De Houtrak Golf
Club form the Netherlands. The last time England were victorious
in the event was back in 1990 when Ealing took top prize for
the second year in a row.
